Deep in croc country
Karumba is a sleepy little fishing town on the Gulf of Carpentaria in north Queensland. The water is a beautiful steely blue - inviting, tantalising, seductive but oh so dangerous. It's crawling with salt water crocodiles. They emerge from the water to stroll the streets, have a coffee, hitch a ride and then pinch your snags. Ha ha. Just joking. But in four days we've seen TWO big beauties ... at a distance.

| Look closely. He's there baking in the sun. About four metres in size. |
 |
Just down the river we spotted Mrs Jabiru with lovely red legs and a turquoise neck.
|
We spotted Krys Croc and Mrs Jabiru on a sunset cruise on the Norman River. Karumba is also famous for the most spectacular sunsets. Piccys of the cruise with our travelling mates Robyn and Robert Burns follow. Garry got lucky - twice.
And then the sunset photos. Aaaahhhhhh
 |
| This last one was taken through the porthole in the loo. :) |
The Sunset Bar at Karumba Point also offers beautiful views of the setting sun.
 |
Karumba Point in the day. No crocs sighted. Very very tempted to have a quick dip.
|
 |
| Robyn and Robert's friends threw a farewell party for them on Saturday night. Classic camping party |
Karumba is also renowned for its Barramundi. Alas, our fearless fishermen didn't snag one and we resorted to Grunter, recommended by locals and truly delicious.
And now we're moving on via the Savannah Way to Burketown, Lawn Hill National Park and then into deepest darkest Northern Territory. Woo hoo. A few pics of final departure preparations.

| Garry getting down and getting dirty vacuuming the van |

Polishing the Prado. How long do you think it's going to stay white on the red dust roads?
|
Love seeing Garry's rear end, doing a bit of cleaning....and the lovers on the cruise.
ReplyDeleteSee you soon and don't forget to keep writing your so interesting words.
Safe driving and don't you dare take a dip.....
Ohhhhh Those crocs get everywhere. Actually I thought Garry was wrestling one in the van but they realised it was only the vacuum. Good practice though.!
ReplyDeleteAmazing photos... Keep them coming.
